IOLERO Community Advisory Council
One of IOLERO’s primary missions is to engage the community in order to make sure you are aware of our work and to be informed about your viewpoints, concerns and experiences. Our Community Advisory Council (CAC), composed of volunteers from across Sonoma County, helps IOLERO carry out this mission.
Our goal is to be present at a minimum of one community event per month. For example, we host a booth at the Cinco de Mayo celebration in Roseland and we give presentations at smaller community events such as the Senior Health Fair in Cloverdale. Additionally, we host community outreach meetings at different locations throughout the county.

Duties
IOLERO is an independent, non-police county agency that investigates Sheriff-involved fatalities, reviews complaints alleging misconduct by the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office or its employees, accepts and investigates whistleblower complaints, conducts community outreach, and makes policy recommendations to the Sheriff’s Office. The CAC supports IOLERO’s work by researching law enforcement issues and policies to make policy recommendations to the Sheriff’s Office, and working as a bridge between IOLERO, law enforcement, and the various communities of Sonoma County.
-
Membership Composition
The CAC is made up of eleven volunteers from the community, with members of the Board of Supervisors appointing two each in their Supervisorial Districts and the IOLERO Director making one at-large appointment. All appointments are for two years and members may be re-appointed. CAC members fulfill roles and duties such as attending CAC meetings, supporting IOLERO and the adopted positions of the CAC, and abiding by CAC bylaws. Applicants should possess a passion for social justice and civilian oversight of law enforcement and the ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with people of different backgrounds and viewpoints.
-
Meeting Schedule
The Community Advisory Council meets the first Monday of each month. Applicants must be willing to make a commitment of approximately three to five hours per month for CAC and ad hoc meetings and projects, plus be willing to commit to one to two full weekend days per year to assist with community outreach events. Please visit our website for more information at: https://sonomacounty.ca.gov/IOLERO/
-
Compensation
Members of the CAC shall serve without compensation but may, with prior approval, be reimbursed for authorized, reasonable, and necessary expenses incurred in the performance of their official duties, should funding become available for this purpose.
